Happy New year! I hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful winter break and holiday. I have enjoyed the time off and have been recuperating from my hospital stay. I also enjoyed a low-key birthday with my family.
As of now, I am still off work. The surgery on my wrist has been postponed due to the hospital stay and I am waiting to be cleared with my doctor for work. I will be popping in like before to make sure things are going smoothly. I will still be checking emails and involved in the planning of the day to day of what we are doing.
As of now, we will begin the work on our presentations for the community about everything we learned on our trip. I will be going over all of the requirements with my students and getting them started on the project, probably on Wednesday. Once I have done that, the project will be posted on the website.
One thing you can do now is to start to think of someplace your child can present in the community. It can be a church group, boy/girl scout group, your place of work, former school, etc. I have a few people who are requesting presentations, so if you can't think of someplace, let me know. Presentations can be done during the school day and your child will not be penalized. You will have to transport your child. I have the computer and projector available for them to use if needed. Students must present to over 5 people and that can't include you. The group that is presented to will be grading your child.
The presentations will not begin until after February 15, so please, don't panic. There is lots of time to arrange it.
Also, please remember, I did extend the date for the projects to this Thursday so no late amusement parks or essays will be accepted.
As I am not there daily now, the calendar may not be updated daily. I will do my best to coordinate with the sub to do so but I don't want to promise anything.
Finally, your child's report card is going home today. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Mrs. Giffen isn't able to answer questions about grades.
Have a wonderful day. Mrs. Levine ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++November 27, 2017
I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! It is so nice to have a week off devoted to eating!
Now we have 3 weeks of school until winter break. We have only 3 weeks left until the end of the quarter. We also have only 8 days until we leave for Los Angeles. Things are going to happen quickly over the next 3 weeks.
Between now and when we leave next week we will be doing a lot of work to get ready. We will be having guest speaker Cynthia Merrill in our classroom teaching us how to speak publicly while at Disneyland. She will also help us on our 30 second elevator speech presentations. We will also be learning more about the Holocaust. We will be watching 2 movies, one, Nicky’s Family and the other, Paper Clips. For literature, we will be working on a poem about the Holocaust. Please understand that all of the material is age appropriate.
Over the next week, before our trip, you will also be receiving a lot of information via email. I want to put your mind at ease, that if there was to be a strike that started on the day we are supposed to leave, we will still be going. Please check email regularly for information about our trip.
Also, I wanted to let you know, that I have been officially put on leave for my workman’s comp case. I had 60 days with moderated work, but now, since I am still under the doctor’s care, my time has run out. I found out about this the day we left for vacation, so I am unsure about the details, but I have Mrs. Giffen in with me this week. I will keep you posted.
Finally, there will be no POW this week. Also, we do have a grade tracker. All students need to work on Spelling City nightly to study for out Wordmasters test which will be next week. We will also be working on it in class.
Here are a few notes for this week. There is no POW this week. There are a lot of papers going home inside of folders. There is also a grade tracker today.
Please remember that money for field trips are coming due soon. If you aren’t sure what you owe, please email me. I have enough chaperones for Disney, but need a few more drivers for Fresno Art Museum.
The mandatory parent meeting is next Wednesday night at 6:15 for parents. (chaperones 5:30) Please make arrangements for 1 adult to be here for the meeting. I must meet with all parents prior to going on the trip.
Thank you so much to all of the parent helpers at carnival last week. I really appreciate it.
I am looking forward to a short week and a long weekend! I hope you enjoy yours too.
First rule of the week. Your child may only bring 1 piece of small candy to school each day this week. That’s it. I will confiscate anything else.
Here are a few things about our upcoming Los Angeles trip: December 7/8
I have enough chaperones now! (thank you)
All money for the trip $200 for student and $163 for chaperone is due no later than November 17th. (please see me before that day if you have special circumstances)
There will be a mandatory parent/chaperone meeting on Wednesday, November 15th. Chaperones must be here at 5:30 and all other parents at 6:15. This is not a meeting for children. It is a meeting to go over everything for the trip and a chance for you to meet your child’s chaperone. I can’t take your child on the trip if you don’t attend.
Please email me with any questions.
Remember you must be fingerprinted for this trip.
I also seem to have enough drivers for the 2 trips for the art museum and movie. If you can still drive, please come anyway, we can always use extras.
There was a problem finding grade trackers yesterday so they didn’t go out. They will go out next week again.
There is a POW this week.
Socktober is over…thank you to those of your who helped out!
Thank you to Sami’s mom Angela for the great cupcakes today!!
If you haven’t already done so, please make sure to look over last week’s new grading policy and click the link to let me know you have read it. https://goo.gl/forms/XnxG9rcTSShUkomB3 18 of you still need to respond.
Have a nice day. Mrs. Levine
October 23, 2017
Hello Room 5 parents,
First of all thank you all for coming to parent conferences last week. It was wonderful to meet with everyone.
The one thing that was a common theme throughout conferences is that our students need to be more consistent with turning their work in on time, both class and homework. This is a problem throughout the 5th grade. So, after much discussion, our grading/homework policy is changing a bit.
10% deduction up to 5 days, 50% after that
After 30 days no credit will be given
Missing Work (per quarter)
Two missing assignments result in a conference with teacher and study hall
Third offense results in phone call home and detention(recess) until missing assignment is turned in.
After the 4th offense the effort grade will change to a ‘P’ on the report card (detention)
After the 7th offense the effort grade will change to a ‘U’ on the report card(detention)
After 7th offense, parent/student/teacher conference will be needed
Work lower than a “c” may be resubmitted for up to a “c” grade with the exception of math tests and written essays which may be resubmitted for full credit. (this doesn’t change effort grade)
Classroom Pull-Out (sports and music)
A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained for classroom pull-out or the student is at risk for removal until GPA is restored.
Missing work for that day results in no practice
Missing work on a game day results in being put on probation with the risk of removal from the team upon next occurrence
Finally, today is the first day of grade tracker. It will be going home every Monday for the rest of the quarter. Every Monday night, please look up grades with your child and fill them in. Please make sure to initial. Any paper not initialed results in a lower grade. (this is worth 5 points) There is a short reflection that must be filled out too.
By looking at your grade tracker weekly, you will see what your child is missing, which will help with the above grading policy.
Finally, there are just a few business items that need to be taken care of.
Thank you for signing up for helping at the cakewalk and providing cakes.
Thank you to those of you who have volunteered to drive for our field trips. At this point I still need drivers for the art museum.
I DO NOT have enough chaperones for the Los Angeles trip, which is December 7th and 8th. I have so many payments due by November 1st. So, if I haven’t heard from anyone by then, our trip will be cancelled. I can only take MOMS at this point. I need people to stay with our girls.
In anticipation that I do get enough chaperones, the entire payment of the $200 is due on November 17th. This is the last day I can cancel the bus.
I am so sorry if this letter is sounding so harsh. It is not my intention, but we need to get things on track in order for your children to be ready for 6th grade.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, please click the link below that will lead you to a form so you can acknowledge the receipt of this letter.
October 16, 2017 Hello Everyone! Parent conference week is here and I am looking forward to meeting and speaking with all of you this week. Please email me if you have any problems with your appointment time and we can re-schedule. I will be going over many things at conference, so this letter will be short.
I just want to remind everyone it is Socktober, so please bring in your socks and undies to donate for the hurricane relief in Puerto Rico! Have a good week. Mrs. Levine
October 9, 2017 Hello Everyone,
Today is the first day of quarter 2 for the school year. Report cards are finished and anything that is turned in now is going to be on the 2nd quarter report card. I will be posting the parent conference schedules for this Friday and next week. Please email me if you need to change your times and I will do my best to accommodate you.
You are receiving 2 field trip permission slips today. One is to see the movie Wonder, a novel we will begin reading this week, the other to the Fresno Art Museum. Both cost money. Please look at the slip. I also need parent drivers for both trips AND they are 2 days in a row, so I hope you can all step up to the plate so we don’t have to cancel. Remember that all field trips are academic in nature and shouldn’t be missed except for illness.
We are also finalized for the LA field trip. It is December 7th and 8th. All parents who attend must have fingerprints on file by November 15th in order to attend. Parents who would like to attend as a chaperone must send in $163 for their part of the trip. Please remember that fundraising money can’t go towards adult trips. I will write down the order that money is turned in and once the first 10 adults turn it in, they will be our chaperones. ( I will take 2 back-up names) Just so you are aware, moms may chaperone in either a boys room or girls room. Dads may only chaperone in a boys room, so if you are a dad of a girl, you will not be in the same room as your child. There are NO extra rooms with extra adults or families, etc. Also, I will put together who is in your group with your child and you. This is done with careful consideration and at my discretion. Finally, please remember that this is a working field trip and although there is lots of fun, you will be called on to do many things. (waling long distances is a huge part of the trip)
The amount for the child portion of the field trip is $200.
I will be finalizing fundraising money tomorrow after all of the fundrun money is turned in. I will then post how much each child has earned. This money will be used first to offset the cost of the LA trip, anything leftover can go to the small other trips.
We will be starting another book, Wonder, this week. This is a book that goes along with our 50,000 random acts of kindness campaign. Your child is responsible for this book. Please remember that they must bring it back and forth to school daily. We don’t have extra copies.
Also, it is SOCKTOBER….our class is sponsoring the 5th grade fundraiser to benefit the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. All month we are collecting socks and underwear that will be sent to Puerto Rico. Please kindly donate.
October 2, 2017 YES! It is finally fall! This time of year is always fun, and incredibly busy.
Thank you all who came out on Saturday night to the football game. It was a great honor. Everyone seemed to have a great time. I know I did.
So, with October here, we will be starting to work on our Human Element project for the year. The focus this year is 50,000 random acts of kindness. This month we are going to focus on 2 things first, this month is anti-bullying month, so we will be talking about that. Second, our first cause of kindness will be to participate in Socktober. ( a flyer is going home today) The 5th grade is going to collect packages of socks and underwear to send to the victims of Hurricane Maria. This will last all month and we will have a donation box in our classroom. Please help us take part in this worthy cause.
This is the week I am finalizing my grades and finishing up report cards. I am trying to collect all missing work from your students. There will be NO POW this week due to working on report cards.
If you haven’t already done so, please fill in the parent conference slip and send it back to me. I have a really full schedule and a lot of spots are already taken up. I will be sending home confirmations next week as well as posting the times on the website.
Also, several of you have asked about how much money your children have earned. I am in the process of figuring that out all of the percentages, etc. I will let you know by the end of the week.
I also will be putting out all of the information about our LA trip. Once again the dates are December 7/8. I will need about 11 chaperones. Please start planning.
Also, we have an upcoming field trip to on November 16th to the Fresno Art Museum.
If you are planning on going on the field trips, please make sure to go and get your fingerprints done. They must be done in order to go on the trip. If you have questions, please ask the office for details.
I can still use help in the classroom. I have a couple of moms coming on Fridays but would love someone on Thursday’s. Please email me if you are available.
I also need a parent to volunteer to put together our part of Carnival. Please let me know if you are able to help out with carnival.
Have a great week. Thank you, Mrs. Levine
************************************************************************************* September 25, 2017 Hello Everyone. There are a lot of things going on this week.
****First of all*** The Fresno State football game is this Saturday. I still don't have the time or details but as soon as I have them, I will let you know. I am sending home a regular permission slip for the night. Please fill it out if your child is going, whether you are chaperoning or not. THERE ARE NO MORE PARENT SPOTS on the bus. Thank you to all of the parents who are coming. If you haven't signed up, your child can still ride the bus with us and will be assigned a chaperone. You can drop them off at the bus and pick them up at school after. I am anticipating that we will leave after the 3rd quarter. (unless it's a nail biter) I can't imagine that the kids will want to stay longer...I will let you know the plan by Friday. Please call me or email me with any questions. This week we will be finishing up the book Walk Two Moons. The students will be assigned a book project. They will have about 2 weeks to do it and it will be done at home. It is a bit of art, writing, etc. I have pictures posted of last years students projects so you can get an idea of how they should look. (on website) Also, the kids have been working on their Hyperdocs about the book. They will continue to work on them until they are finished. They will receive a final grade on the Hyperdoc. We will be using Scootpad on a more regular basis now. I have gone into the program and put practices together to work on. These are mostly reviews of things we have been doing in class. Fundrun is this week. It's always a lot of fun for the kids. Please don't send in the Fundrun paperwork until you have collected all of the money. Once I have collected and turned in all of the money, in about 2 weeks, I will give all of you who fundraised money your totals that will go towards field trips. I will be giving you more details about field trips coming up in the next couple of weeks. I am finalizing a lot of details right now, but I can tell you the the date of the Los Angeles trip is December 7th and 8th. Parent conferences are around the corner and so I will be sending out the request for time sheets. Please check 3 times that will work for you and I will try to give you your first choice. If you have a special request for day or time, please let me know. Sorry for the lengthy email but as the weeks go on, we will be getting busier. Please check emails often and if you haven't already done so, please sign up for the classroom Facebook page. Have a great week. https://www.facebook.com/groups/levineroom5/ ****Mrs. Levine
(this letter is going home in blue folder too) September 18, 2017
It is unusual for me to actually send home a letter our weekly folder, but this one is rather important.
There are several things that I need to go over in the letter. In the end, you will be asked to sign the bottom of the form so I have confirmation you have read it.
Today, you are receiving progress reports for the first quarter. The grades are all over the place. Please remember that the transition from 4th to 5th grade is huge and difficult. Your children are working hard, but also are getting used to many new things. Please don’t be alarmed over these grades (they change daily) but instead, please talk to your children about the effort they are putting out in class, and on finishing their work on time.
Please sign the progress report and send it back to school.
Next, I am not sure if your children told you or not, but I was awarded the local National Extra Yard for Teachers award through the College Football Playoff Foundation. This is a program Fresno State hosts yearly.
As a recipient of this award, our class gets an extra special treat. We are all invited to attend the September 30th Fresno State Bulldog football game. Even better, all of the kids will be transported by charter bus to and from the game from Manchester. All of the kids also get free tickets and a free meal.
So, to clarify, all of our class is invited to go. Due to this being a Saturday evening game (7PM) I am requiring several chaperones to attend this trip. Any parent/guardian who chaperones will ride the bus and attend the game with us. All of you will receive a free ticket to the game as well as a free meal.
On the attached form, please fill out if you are able to chaperone. I will take approximately 15-18 parents. (if too many sign-up, Mrs. Gengozian will draw names)
I am not sure yet if the school district is going to require a permission slip or not, but I need a commitment from all parents that their student can attend. (form attached) I am not 100% sure of all of the details as of yet but I anticipate that we will have to be at the school around 5:30PM and that we will be returning around 10:00PM.
Also, all of your students will be getting their class Human Element shirt to wear for the event.
As I get more details, I will let you know. Please contact me with any questions.
Now, as far as this week goes with work, we are going to continue reading Walk Two Moons. We should be finishing the book by the end of the week so anticipate a final project assignment coming soon.
This week we are also fine-tuning our narrative writing. We are doing a small project called #Googlyeyed. All of the kids will be receiving googly eyes. They have a Hyperdoc that has directions and examples of what they are doing. Please, if they don’t have their own cell phone, allow them to use yours to take pictures of their ‘eyes’. After they have put their ‘eyes’ out there, and taken pictures, they will then write a short narrative story to go along with it. We will be focusing on dialogue for this project.
This will only last the week…and I am looking forward to the results and the stories.
*************************************************************************************************************** September 12, 2017
(please keep your child home if they are sick. We have many kids out with stomach virus' and upper respiratory infections) Hello Parents,
I am sorry that these Monday letters are more like Tuesday letters this year. Things have really been so busy it’s crazy. So, let me give you a brief update on what is going on in class.
Yesterday, we spent a portion of the day talking about 9/11 and doing some work around Patriots Day. We had some very good conversation in class and I asked everyone to go home last night with their papers and talk about it with you. We turned in our papers today. The grade that will be given will be on effort and not on content.
We also were visited by the Dairy Council and were giving an assembly on the dairy and ag industry in Fresno County. It was a very busy day.
Today, we are DRP testing and we have picture day. We had a brief discussion on our 9/11 conversations with our parents and are now onto studying for our chapter 1 math test that will be tomorrow.
Yesterday, I was supposed to hand out progress reports but was unable to because when I printed them, most of the information was gone from my gradebook. I put in a help ticket to our Atlas desk, but now understand why some of you have been emailing me about your child’s grades. I am looking into what is going on and will send the progress reports home by the end of the week.
That being said, I will say that as a whole, this class is going much slower on our work and learning concepts. This is our 5th week of school and we are about 1 week behind where I would like to be. I am not overly concerned about it right now, especially because 5th grade is a difficult transition, but please know, I am not pushing your kids ahead right now, but taking the time to make sure they are really understanding things.
As I said, this week is the 5th week of the 1st quarter. We have 3 weeks left. We have parent conferences coming up in October. Things are starting to come up very quickly. I also have been working on dates for our trips. Apparently, because of the couple of hurricanes, Disney has been working on relief efforts of employees etc. and they have not provided me confirmation of our dates. I spoke to them today and am hoping to hear something by the end of the week.
Please remind your child nightly they need to be reading their Walk Two Moon books. We are going to work a bit faster on it so we can get it finished soon. Please remember that we are writing in our Google Keep daily. This is basically on online agenda.
If you have any questions, please contact me. I am happy to meet with you or talk to you at anytime. Have a nice week.
September 5, 2017 Hello Parents! I hope everyone had a great 3-day weekend. I spend the entire weekend in bed with bronchitis. There were several kids out last week sick with one thing or another. I guess this year we are starting out sooner than normal. I would like to ask you to please make sure to keep your child home if they aren't feeling well. Remember that sometimes we are contagious before we show a lot of symptoms. Also, as a precaution, if any of you can send in wipes for our desks and hand sanitizer, we will clean our desks a couple times a week to help with the germs. Also, if your child appears sick, I will be calling to have you pick them up from school.
Next, today was the day to turn in cookie dough orders. It looks like many of you sold cookie dough which is really exciting! I will send out an accounting of all of the money earned per student that is applied to field trips. Don't forget, the end of the month there is a final opportunity to earn money for trips, which is fundrun.
Please look through the folders that are going home today. There are many papers returned. I am not keeping papers as I planned to do, but instead returning them to your child to take home in their folders. This way, you are able to look at them and see what they are doing.
All of your children are now reading the book Walk Two Moons for their literature circle. Please have them bring the book back and forth daily. They have reading in the book, most nights. They have an assignment, in their Google Classroom with lots of activities that have to do with the book. They will be working on this both at home and at school.
Please remember that many nights your child will have homework on their computers. Please encourage them to show you their Google Keep nightly so you can see the work they need to do.
As a reminder, several of you haven't signed up for our class Facebook page yet. Please follow the link below to do so. You will really enjoy the daily posts of classroom happenings. www.facebook.com/groups/levineroom5/
Finally, I have a parent working in the class every other Friday but would like someone for a couple of hours on Thursdays. Please let me know if you are able to work on Thursdays.
Have a great week. Mrs. Levine
August 28, 2017
Hello, I have a few things to go over for this week. I am sorry that I am getting these letters out so late, but I am still dealing with my wrist injury, which is making it difficult to write.
We are working hard on getting things going in class and each day or 2 adding a subject onto our list of things we are doing. So far, we are doing math, science, computer lab, writing, social studies and tomorrow we should be adding our first novel of the year. We have been using several websites and many of them, daily. Today we added on to our list and are using Spelling City. Last Friday, I introduced something called Google Keep. This is an agenda piece to our Google suite. I have asked all of your students to show you their Keep. We will be writing in it daily and attaching it to our calendars so that each student will be responsible for keeping track of all of our work.
If you ordered book orders, I have entered them today and hopefully, they will be here by the end of next week.
I am now finally ready for parents to help in the classroom. Please respond to this email and let me know when you would like to come. I will try to make up a schedule.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a nice week. Mrs. Levine ************************************************************************************
August 22, 2017 Hello, this is just a quick letter about a few things in our classroom. First of all, if you already haven't, please go onto our Facebook page (see link below) and sign up. I have already started posting on it. Next, there are a few kids who haven't finished getting all of their school supplies yet. Please try to get them asap. We are working hard in here, so having supplies are important.
Last night was the first real homework assignment of the school year. I had 9 students who didn't have their homework finished. If it was your child, you received a phone call. Please remember that it is really important to starting checking the classroom calendar for assignments nightly. Most work is what hasn't been finished in class, but it is still important. If you missed back to school night, I have probably already reached out to you. If you click in this link, you can see the presentation that I gave that night. Please let me know if you have any questions. (docs.google.com/presentation/d/1zLiUNuwxgWGVoOCSFNTZcqhS_dTAqv8SbHbbblPvNVU/edit?usp=sharing)
Finally, I sent book orders home yesterday. You can go online to Scholastic.com and go to the book order page and you can order online with this code...GW8RG. You can also send money to school with your child. Thank you, Mrs. Levine +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ August 14, 2017 Hello! Today is the first day of school. I can't believe that summer went so quickly. I am looking forward to being your child's teacher this year. I am hoping that your child came home today and showed you how to get on this website. It's part of their homework. I have showed them all around this website and I expect them to do the same for you. Please, click here, to go to the parent survey and fill it out. It is a way for me to get to know you. (If you've filled it out already, don't do it twice) Remember, it is their homework to show you around this website:). Also, you are receiving the normal packet with emergency cards, etc. Some of you took them home on Friday. Please make sure all papers are filled out and brought back to class by Wednesday. We have labs Weds. and we need the paperwork for kids to be able to attend. If you haven't already, please go to our class Facebook page and request access. I will be talking about this more on Thursday night, but I post often things your children are doing in the classroom. www.facebook.com/groups/levineroom5/
I look forward to seeing all of you at 6:30 or 7:15 on Thursday night. Mrs. Levine
